ExperienceDr. Fong has been teaching Social Work at the University of Nebraska for twenty years. For 18 years she taught undergraduate social work at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In 2011 she began to teaching at the MSW level for the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She taught theories and techniques of therapy and realized she wanted to return to her work as a therapist.
EducationHer undergraduate degree is in Psychology and Sociology. She received a Master’s in Social Work degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Ph.D. in Family Sociology from UNL. Her past experiences include employment in rehabilitation facilities, psychiatric hospitals, counseling centers, rural hospitals and community development agencies.
Special Areas of InterestShe is particularly drawn to work with children, especially children in out-of-home placements. Her dissertation looked at the long-term impact of foster care on adult well-being. Her foray with foster care has continued to include directing a summer camp, Royal Family Kids’ Camp, for children in foster care. She and her husband directed a camp for 10 years and are now focusing on working with the national office. They are members of the Camp Cabinet and provide intensive training for individuals who are interested in starting new camps.
Personal NoteShe is married to Dan Fong, a journalism teacher at Kearney High School. They have two grown children. Sandy will be working in both the Kearney and Grand Island offices.
