Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction/Mindful Approach to Living

We are rooted in mindfulness practice at Wholeness Healing Center.  We have many different programs that you can attend to learn this practice as well as learning it in individual therapy. Check out our programs.  We have our MBSR Course, Mindful Approach to Living Course for adults which is offered several times a year.  We also have ongoing Mindfulness groups for children and adolescents.  Also offered is Dialectical Behavior therapy groups for men, women and adolescents.

Mindfulness is paying attention, on purpose to what is going on in this moment in a nonjudging, compassionate way.  Learning and practicing how to be mindful is life changing. Developing the practice of nonjudgmental awareness of one’s thoughts and emotions increases the ability to confront and cope with difficult emotions and experiences and handle those moments with choices of responding rather than reacting. Life still happens with its ebb and flow but through mindfulness practice one can learn to maintain a quiet sense of groundedness in the midst of it all.  As we develop mindfulness practice we may find ourselves aware of being uncomfortable, whether it is from a situation, an emotion or chronic pain and also find ourselves being able to lean into the uncomfortableness with a new sense of empowerment to handle life.

Mindful Approach to Living Course (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction- MBSR)

The Mindful Approach to Living is a MBSR course. MBSR is a program where you learn how to cultivate awareness and reduce stress and suffering in your life. Through learning and practicing mindfulness you develop the capacity to be awake and present during your moments and manage your stress, pain, illness and your life. Mindfulness is being present in your moment by “paying attention on purpose while cultivating an attitude of non-judgmental acceptance”. The focus is on learning how to be mindful by becoming aware of thoughts, feelings, your body, habitual patterns and responding rather than reacting in your life. Initially, Jon Kabat Zinn developed this program for people with chronic pain. It is now taught worldwide for all populations wanting to manage their life in a more effective, responsive way. It is through the practice and cultivation of mindfulness that you learn how to lean into being uncomfortable in the moment and how to manage that uncomfortableness. This ultimately teaches you how to manage life during times of pain, suffering and/or stress.

The central focus of the program is intensive training in formal and informal mindfulness practice and its integration into everyday life. Mindfulness is taught through embodiment of the experience and practice.

Janie Pfeifer Watson has been trained and certified in MBSR through the Center for Mindfulness in UMASS. All of our therapists teaching mindfulness have been through the eight-week course of learning how to implement formal practice into her life.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Group

DBT is a comprehensive cognitive behavioral treatment that emphasizes the psychosocial aspects of treatment.  This treatment focuses on problem solving and acceptance-based strategies within a framework of dialectical methods. DBT works within four modalities of skill development – distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

DBT is applicable and effective for people living with a range of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, addictions, bi-polar and post-traumatic stress disorder.  Practicing mindfulness alone helps people with or without mental health conditions.  It helps to improve well-being, attention to the present moment, and increase positive emotional experiences while decreasing negative emotions and distress.
