Hodan Farah

Provisional Licensed Mental Health Practitioner

Hodan Farah is a provisionally licensed mental health practitioner. She was born in Somalia, Africa. However, she came of age in Sioux City, IA, where she went to middle and high school. She went on to earn her educational degrees in Minnesota. Her philosophical and clinical theoretical orientations stem both from her personal and professional experiences. As a clinician, she believes that the clients are their own “expert”. As a clinician, she will help you navigate and find practical solutions to everyday stressors, challenges, and suffering, so that you can make your own decision and find joy again in your daily life and overall well-being.

Education and Work History

Hodan earned her undergraduate degree in English/Literature from Minnesota State University in Mankato in 2006. She continued to pursue a Master of Arts in Higher Administration and Leadership/Public policy from the University of Saint Thomas, in St. Paul, Minnesota, earned in 2009.  In 2020 Hodan graduated with a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. Prior to graduation, she did her clinical internship at Creighton University for a full year, and her practicum at the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Community clinic.  These experiences gave her the opportunity to see various clients from all diverse backgrounds. At her most recent job as a  Staff Counselor at Grinnell College, in Grinnell, IA, she counseled young- adults offering both individual and group therapy. She aided clients with presenting issues and concerns such as depression, anxiety, and adjustment. She has experiences in BIPOC, Self-Compassion, and International supportive/therapeutic groups. She has a great deal of interest both clinically and at the societal level to advocate on behalf of underrepresented and other intersectionality of marginalized populations in general. She believes this population often does not get the mental health care they deserve. Hodan advocates and dedicates time on social justice counseling and empowering clients to examine impediments and use their strengths to prevail over life’s challenges.

Training and Certifications

Hodan uses a multi-system approach to help her clients achieve their therapeutic goals and treatment plans. She has certifications in informed-trauma care/healing, emotional intelligence, and self-compassion. At the core of her modalities she operates from a Rogerian perspective meaning she utilizes centered/person, centered humanistic/existential (seeing the whole person), and evidenced-based modalities/techniques such as, CBT, and DBT. She also incorporates strength, resilience, and self-love/kindness of the self, as part of her multi-system approaches.

Personal

In her personal time, Hodan enjoys spending time her family and friends. She is a naturist, hiking, visiting parks, and being in the outdoors. She likes watching sports (especially the NFL, she is a Saints fan….WHO DAT!). She appreciates being physically active, as she has participated in CrossFit, and enjoys challenging physical activities. She loves to discover unfamiliar things, such as music, books, restaurants, and travel.
