Neurographic Art for Brain Healing

By Jane Ryan, Interview of Jane Ryan
Neurographic art is simple artformat that has been used recently as a healing modality for people who have experienced brain trauma. Jane Ryan, a retired nurse/mental health counselor, author and film maker from central Nebraska is one of those who has found healing in this modality.
According to Ryan, “In the ‘old days’, it was believed that once the trauma occurred via accident, sports injuries, abuse or high stress levels, that was that. Solutions to repair brain issues were slim, but now brain specialists understand the brain is more “plastic than ever known”. Ryan went on to share information that in 2014, Russian physician and psychologist Pavel Piskarev introduced neurographic art as a healing technique. “We’re learning that head injuries can cause chemical/electrical systems in the brain to fail due to lack of complicated communication systems”, Ryan shared. Trauma can limit access to those centers while neuorgraphic art is an “interesting and fun method of repairing or replacing injured synapses within the brain”. Ryan further reports that while she was learning to heal from her own brain injury, she learned of Dr. Piskarev’s work and “decided to give his ideas a whirl”. She has practiced his simple techniques for three years now and reported improvements in sleep (20+ year sleep disorder 90% gone) and improvements in memory, both in long and short-term memory. Ryan also reported significant shift in anxiety management and problem solving and that her “traumatic experiences reframed to softer, kinder memories”.
The modality involves art; Ryan initially made “quick” art pieces, in 30 minutes or so, and still uses that technique of lines first, added color later when struggling with accessing sleep. Ryan has since shared the brain healing techniques with doctors, friends, and family. Her success in the process has propelled her to educate and practice the neurograhic art.
Ryan has offered individual and group classes for those living with injuries and brain trauma, the youngest at 8 years old and the oldest at 85 years. She notes that, “It is fun watching people who can improve quickly and painlessly”, similar to her own experience.
