Notes of Growth – Using Hypnotherapy To Address Fears

(Submitted by a client)

I am a client of Deb England’s. I started going to Deb for hypnosis in July 2014 due to an extreme fear of heights. I was unable to even watch other people on stairs, balconies, etc. Pictures of skyscraper workers really bothered me. I’m not going to say I’m totally cured, but I am now able to go to the top of the football and baseball bleachers. I even rode the zip line at Fox Seasonal Farms last month.

To give you a little history, I am told that, when I was three or four years old, I was on a Ferris wheel with my brother and cousin (ages 10 or 11) when the Ferris wheel broke down with us at the top. Being so little, I just thought I could hop or climb down. I guess my brother and cousin had their hands full trying to keep me in the seat while the crew worked to manually move the wheel. Of course, they had others to unload before they got to us.  My mother was very hysterical. I do not remember any of this.

During regressive hypnotherapy, I told Deb about the fear of losing my Godfather out of the back of the pickup during deer hunting when I was five years old.

When I was 20, my husband Bob and I went to a Royal’s baseball game. Of course, we ended up in the nose bleed section. That area is so steep that the top of the seat in the row in front of me was below my feet. I was glued to my seat.  I was unable to stand for the National Anthem. I really thought as it got darker than my fear would lessen. I was wrong. The shadows from the lights made it worse. Before long, I was starting to hyperventilate. To get out of there, Bob had to stand in front of me. I took ahold of the back of his belt and he led me to the tunnel and down to the next level. This caused him to miss a homerun by Reggie Jackson. He was really mad at me.

When I was 28, Bob and I took our three year old daughter to Yellowstone. It was in October so there were very few people around and no services were open. Bob was wearing a new pair of cowboy boots. When we got to the upper falls, Bob was carrying our daughter down the stairs to view the falls. His boots were slick and he slipped on the stairs and almost fell with our daughter over the railing into the upper falls. Our daughter ended up with a concussion and both were very bruised and shaken. It was horrible to watch this happening and not be able to do anything. I still had nightmares about this and that was 28 years ago.

Due to these events, my fear had gotten so bad that I was unable to go up or down large stairs, bleachers, or ramps. I used my 75 year old mother as an excuse not to go up the ramps at a Nebraska Football game. Heights didn’t bother her and she was healthy enough to go up the rams and bleachers. I was unable to go upstairs at a ballgame to watch my son perform. I had to stay on ground level to watch. I couldn’t stand to watch others (especially children) around stairs or heights of any type. The fear was really interfering with my life.

After going to counseling with Deb and doing the regression hypnotherapy, I have gone onto balconies that I was unable to go upon before; I am able to go up and down stairs with railings; I have actually walked across the top step of a bleacher by holding onto the back from one side to another; and my greatest accomplishment to date… going up the stairs to the zip line, standing there while a young girl secured my harness, and stepping off the

ledge to ride the line. That was great! With Deb’s help and the support of my  children and friends, I am looking forward to trying other adventures.

Most fears and phobias we have are as a result of some type of trauma in our lives. Hypnotherapy allows us to go back the situations, express the emotions that we have been holding, have corrective experiences, and then let go of the pain so we can move into the present in a much better way, really stepping into our “adult” selves.

Hypnotherapy sessions are usually two hours, but the changes in our lives can be enormous. Holding on to fears from our past really hinders us living up to our full potential.
