LOVE YOURSELF FIRST

When you read that statement what comes to your mind? Have you thought about it, do you love yourself? How do you love yourself and where do you start?

It is important to love yourself because it helps with self-confidence and self-worth. “When you are truly in love with yourself and happy, you should stop comparing yourself to others so much and should find yourself more confident, not worrying as much about what others think.” (Hurst)  When we love ourselves we are in touch with ourselves and what our needs are. It helps us to be happier, resilient, more positive, and better able to love others.

Do we love ourselves? Think of someone in your life that you care about and how you treat them. Are you treating yourself the same way? We are the first to criticize and beat ourselves up. We dwell on the faults we have and fail to look at the good things about ourselves. We spend much of our time taking care of everyone around us rather than taking time to develop a healthy relationship with ourselves. Is that because we are thinking that it is selfish to love ourselves? Or is it just too much work to take care of ourselves? Are we avoiding it by staying busy so we don’t have to take a serious look? Or is it that we don’t know how to love ourselves or where to begin?

How do we learn to love ourselves? You will need to take some time to take a serious look at how you treat yourself, what you do to take care of your mind, body and spirit? In the article How to love yourself: 15 steps to believing in yourself again by Lachlan Brown, he shares ways to show your body and mind self-love in your everyday life by, sleeping properly, eating healthy, giving yourself time and space to understand your spirituality, exercising regularly, thanking yourself and those around you, playing when you need it, avoiding vices and toxic influences, and reflecting and meditating. You can find many ways to help you take care of yourself by doing some research on the internet searching for “self-care”.

We may be having some emotions that are blocking us from loving ourselves. Brown shares that we need to accept the pain and forgive ourselves. It is hard to accept who we are and what we have been through, so we ignore it and continue on the same destructive path. Sometimes it is hard because of the trauma or some of the emotions that we carry because of our life story. We need to remind ourselves that each one of us is special and no one on this earth is perfect. “Self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.” Parker Palmer
