EAP Benefits From the Therapist’s Office

“Wow, that’s kind of nice, that they recognize the stress we have”. It doesn’t matter if the stress is generated from the office or from home, at some point, there is a high probability that an employee’s stress may affect his/her work performance. In fact, stress from work ends up at home, and stress from home ends up at work. We do not live in a vacuum, and the EAP program allows businesses to help their employees address those issues.

I have been servicing EAP clients for a number of years and would like to share some comments and perceptions from clients coming in. Many come in due to stress at work, and while at the beginning of the sessions, may be a bit peeved at their work place, as they work through their issues, they begin to see that their employer has placed a higher value on their mental health by making the “free” sessions available to them. That realization then goes a long way to shift the perception of how
they view their employer, not as adversarial, but more collaborative in addressing issues.

For employees coming in with personal issues, they have commented to me how grateful they are that such a program (EAP) exists, as it allows them the freedom and the confidentiality of seeking help without any stigma. I have also heard how appreciative they are of the employer providing this service, as it is no money out of their pockets.

For most of our EAP’s, we accept the sessions for our TRIM LIFE and CLEAN BREAK Programs, for weight reduction and healthy living and tobacco cessation. The message then is that the company is concerned not just about the mental health, but also the physical health of its employees. EAP sessions can also be used for hypnosis, neurobiofeedback, mindfulness training, DBT groupwork, EE system, Migun bed, and Manifesting groups, further enhancing the development and growth holistically.

Employers often don’t hear the words of gratitude about services they make available for their employees, but I do. And in almost all cases, there is great appreciation that businesses care more than just about the production of an employee; the EAP service sends the message that businesses truly care about their employees on a deeper level, in many aspects, as humans with human needs.
